Subaru Cylinder Head Gasket Replacement Issues

Subaru Cylinder Head Gasket Replacement Issues

Even on a routine cylinder head gasket replacement can be pretty labor intensive but even more so on a Automatic transmission vehicle. Customer came in due to poor driveablitiy and an overheating issue. Both very common issues in a cylinder head gasket replacement on a Subaru so it's expected in a vehicle when they get around 90,000 to 120,000 miles. First thing we check is the cooling system just because its fairly simply but gives a ton of information. In our check we found that we were losing pressure with no external leaks. Pulled the oil drain plug and behold all the coolant we were missing.

The rest of the job was pretty routine in pulling the motor so we could seperate the cylinder heads from the engine block except when it came time to actually pull the engine. For some reason the torque convertor that attaches to the flexplate at the back of the engine didn't want to seperate. We checked the bolts to ensure we didn't leave one, tried different angles & even applied a little force. Still nothing, so we removed the torque convertor with the engine. We found out there is a snout that protrudes off the torque convertor and rests in a hole in the flexplate that had received some corrosion and made them stuck together. The real issue was yet to come.

After getting the cylinder heads back from the machine shop, to make sure the surface wasn't warped from overheating, we got the engine all back together and ready to install back into the car. We went to install the torque convertor back into the transmission and it wouldn't seat back into its position properly. After a couple of attempts, we pulled it back out to investigate and we found a small internal snap ring. It had to be set onto the input shaft of the transmission and installed together and not just installing the torque convertor into the transmission like normal. After installing the torque convertor and input shaft into the transmission everything else went together like a breeze.

Lesson learnt: just because that's the way it always goes, it may not always the case.
